CPVC solvent cement is one of the most important materials used when installing CPVC piping systems. But it isn’t simply a “glue” for plastic pipes. It creates a solvent-welded joint by softening the mating surfaces of the CPVC pipe and fitting so that they can fuse together when properly assembled.

A good pipe joint depends on more than simply applying cement and pushing two pieces together. The type of solvent cement, pipe preparation, application technique, fit, temperature, curing conditions and installation procedure can all influence the final joint.

What Is CPVC Solvent Cement?

CPVC stands for Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride, a thermoplastic material widely used in plumbing and hot- and cold-water piping systems. CPVC solvent cement is a specially formulated chemical cement designed to join compatible CPVC pipe and fittings. Unlike conventional adhesives that simply sit between two surfaces and form a layer of adhesive, solvent cement works through a process commonly called solvent welding.

The solvents soften the surfaces of the pipe and fitting. When the prepared surfaces are brought together, the softened material comes into close contact. As the solvents evaporate, the materials form an integrated joint. This is why the quality of the joint depends heavily on proper surface preparation and correct assembly, rather than simply using a large quantity of cement.

 

CPVC solvent cements are covered by ASTM F493, the standard specification for solvent cements used to join CPVC pipe and socket fittings. CPVC piping systems may have separate standards; for example, ASTM D2846 covers CPVC hot- and cold-water distribution system components.
